HTML is a security risk (not quite sure why) and BBCode is a safe alternative to it.

While it's doubtful any of this would happen, if HTML code were to be enabled, malicious users could code fake login pages and such to steal users passwords (This is known as 'phishing'), and they could also write silent downloaders to get viruses on to users' machines.
So it's a security risk to the site's users, but not to the site itself.
