View Full Version : Should the Constitution be amended SPECIFICALLY to ban funeral protests?

I am not sure how I feel about this, but it does seem like the Westboro Baptist Church is bent on harassing people and invading their privacy.

It's too trivial an issue to amend the Constitution over.

I have an issue for the Westboro Baptist Church. I have a major issue with them, I personally don't think its a church at all. They claim that they are a church but protesting at funerals and harassing them during a time of grief and loss. I personally wish every single one of them would drop dead. They are harassing the GLBT community and its horrible that people have to go threw that. Most of the funerals they go to are military, The same military that protects their rights to do exactly what they are doing. Its truly sad and they should be banned. Fuck them and their "Church"

Even with the right to protest, they should not be allowed to protest at funerals where the one who died's family are grieving. I mean, seriously, it's none of their business.

To do that you'd have to repeal part of the first amendment. Namely the freedom of speech bit.

So hell no.

“With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.”

Even the morally reprehensible acts of WBC are a key part of what those soldiers died fighting for. Freedom of speech isn't just for nice words. It covers all words, all peaceful assemblies, not just the ones we approve of.

Why do you say that?

Its just way to specific to amend the whole constitution. But there should at least be a law that protects the families that lost someone in the military. Like they should get them for harassing people or something. They aren't a church, they're a hate group.

freedom of speech is protected not just so that we can say what we like hearing but also so that people can say what they believe even if it makes people angry. American nazis have protected rights even though most people disagree with their beliefs and the WBC has the right to protest as long as they arent hurting anybody then they have that right.

I don't see the practicality in wasting Congress' and the states' time with an issue that affects hardly anybody and only pops up due to the actions of a right-wing fringe church that won't exist in a few decades.

Also, I have issue with its overlapping of the first amendment.

I know this may be a contradictory statement but, it would be un-American to do that
Yes, I hate groups like Fred phelps's little colt that he calls a church that do protest funerals of dead solders. Yes, that is just as un-American also, but it would be against the morals and beliefs of us as Americans and us as America to take away a fundamental right that is so important that we made it as our first amendment.

p.s it's also not against the law to protest the protesters. I have seen many videos of people standing in front of the WBC protesters with big tarps so the families can not see them.

I think it is clear the Constitution needs to be overhauled in a big way. If I was going to use my "amend the Constitution card" I would use it on something more important. But all of this is just a pipe dream since it is easier to send a herd of elephants into space than it is to so much as correct the grammar in the Constitution.
