So, it happened. She broke up with him. I told her that is was her decision, and she decided to break up.

At first, he told me to get on skype. We didn't talk much, as it was pretty awkward. He then let out a soft sob then ended the call.

As I was browsing Facebook, his girlfriend said "HE'S GONNA****ING KILL HIMSELF".

As I talked to him on Facebook chat, he said things along the lines of "don't worry about me." My heart dropped to the floor when he went offline. I frantically called his phone, but to no avail. I then called his girlfriend, and we talked and cried.

Then, he signed on Facebook. He said "I had the knife to my throat, I have to do it, but not now..." He wouldn't respond after pleas to talk to me. He did talk to his ex though. He kept on saying that "You'll learn from Derek [me] eventually. I'm sorry for what I'm about to do."

At this point she and I were freaking out on the phone, I just ran to my school, running calms me down...takes my mind off of things.

He came to his senses a little after this, and said "fine i guess i wont do it". She said "The number of minutes it takes you to promise you won't kill yourself is the number of times I'll cut myself tonight." He responded in under a minute.

From then until now, I am scared because I couldn't help him, and I'd be lost without him...

Just had to get that out, hope it was a good read...

Hey, just talk to him and let him know how much he means to you and how lost you would be without him. Ur a great friend and a great human being for what you did. You showed that you truly care for your friends. You are one of the very few people left with compassion for others

One thing that i've learnt is that there is a big difference between someone who will threaten to kill themself, and someone who will actually do it. I can't say which one of those two your friend was, but in most cases it's the first one. This doesn't mean you should disregard or take his threatenings any less seriously, but I hope that makes you feel somewhat better about it.

You where a good friend, and it sounds like you really helped him. You did the right thing with carrying on talking to him, just try to calm him down and let him know that he's loved. If you really need to guilt trip him into staying. It's not a nice thing to do, so only use it as a last resort. It will make him feel worse but it may make him stay long enough to reconsider.

I've been in similar situations to this several times, and I know it's scary and hard but I guess it's just a part of life and you just have to deal with it.
