Schizophrenia is a medical illness that causes strange thinking, strange feelings, and unusual behavior. It is an uncommon psychiatric illness in children and is hard to recognize in its early phases.
The behavior of children and adolescents with schizophrenia may differ from that of adults with this illness. Child and adolescent psychiatrists look for several of the following early warning signs in youngsters with schizophrenia:
1. trouble telling dreams from reality,
2. seeing things and hearing voices which are not real,
3. confused thinking,
4. vivid and bizarre thoughts and ideas,
5. extreme moodiness,
6. odd behavior,
7. ideas that people are "out to get them,"
8. behaving like a younger child,
9. severe anxiety and fearfulness,
10. confusing television with reality,
11. severe problems in making and keeping friends.
The behavior of children with schizophrenia may change slowly over time. For example, children who used to enjoy relationships with others may start to become more shy or withdrawn and seem to be in their own world. Sometimes youngsters will begin talking about strange fears and ideas. They may start to cling to parents or say things which do not make much sense. These early problems may first be noticed by the child's school teachers.
Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric illness. Early diagnosis and medical treatment are important. Children with the problems and symptoms listed above must have a complete evaluation. Usually these children need individual treatment plans involving other professionals. A combination of medication and individual therapy, family therapy, and specialized programs (school, activities, etc.) is often necessary. Psychiatric medication can be helpful for many of the symptoms and problems identified. These medications require careful monitoring by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Parents should ask their family physician or pediatrician to refer them to a child and adolescent psychiatrist who is specifically trained and skilled at evaluating, diagnosing, and treating children with schizophrenia.

If you think so you should get checked by a shrink doctor. The sooner you are on meds the better.

I wake up and take my meds before going to programs. Then at 10:30 I take my meds again.
Then at 5:30 I take my regular meds plus my bedtime meds.
At program I have tutors instead of regular teachers. I go to programs 5 days a week. Then I have the week end free and I get on VT and do my art lessons. I'm trying to learn to paint and draw.
Thats my life. Boring but I like it.

It has nurses to take carer of everyone and a few doctors drop in to check peoples progress.
Its a plce to park our asses to give families break.
Its better than a mental hospital but its still a treatment program.
We have a lot of group sessions to learn to deal with other people better especially regular people.
Most of us ride a van to programs. I'm 45 minutes away so its a long drive.
Its not much but its a home away from home. Besides its better than special ed. which is where I was in public school.

I think schizophrenia is to serious to just 'put your answers in'
you don't need to decide if you have it or not.
people can just tell.

I'm 18 now, 16 when I started VT.
I found out I was schizo when I was 13 1/2 after trying to kill myself. Three days in a coma, I ended up in a mental hospital. It took a long time to figure out what was wrong with me but my doctor just wouldn't give up on me.
I'm a hebephrenic schizo. Its when you get it when you start puberty.
I'm ok with it now.

Very true. I know someone with this illness and you can 'tell' almost straight away, if they unmedicated especially.

Hmm, this has scared me a little bit.
At night, I always hear people calling my name, loads different voices, over and over again.. I sometimes act like a younger child, but more often than not I act alot older than I am.. I often go in moods about little things, but maybe thats just because of my age..I am extremely paranoid. I go out in the street or to town and I always think people are out to get me, or following me.. I can never sleep at night because I'm so scared of house burglars.. Don't ask me why, because I sleep with two knives under my bed for this reason and if anyone broke in I would kill them, but I still cant sleep.. I hear the slightest of noises and I have to check the whole house.. I have never had a true friend, and I rarely keep the same friends.. not because they ditch me, because i hate them.. Not many people have alot in common with me.. So I dont think thats related to the one on the list but you never know..I get real bad anxiety from anything.. I refuse to go anywhere high..i dont like deep water.. i dont like rollercoasters.. i dont like anything fast except from cars..
I really hope I dont suffer from this but alot of those things on the list match up with my life..
What do you think?

I think you need to go to a psychiatrist to get checked out. Its not a big deal. You just tell him the truth about whats going on in your life. If you have it the sooner you find out the better meds can work for you.

In my limited experience I have found that most doctor refer to the DSM IV book to diagnose mental illness. this book was written by only 300 clinicians and what do they know?

I'm schizophrenic.. I take Loxapine, Nozinan, Piportil (antipsychotics, the Piportil is an injection every other week), Artane (for side effects), valium (for anxiety), Topamax (for mood swings) and I start an MAOI in a week for depression. I take meds when I wake up, at lunch, at supper and bedtime.
I was diagnosed at 14 and I'm 23 now.
