Thumbs up Post Thank You

I've seen this on other forums before and it works brilliantly. For those who don't know, this hack enables users to thank another user via a thanks button, located next to the quote button. The number of times a user has been thanked is shown in their profile.

Here's a screenshot off another forum I use:

I think this is a good idea, better then reputation as reputation doesn't fully show how helpful a user is.

I like the idea, but I don't like the thing under the post that shows who gave thanks for that post - it takes up to much space. It doesn't have the option to give the negative feedback, which I think when used correctly works.

Meh, I've seen this before. I think it's a bit redundant when using the reputation system.

Plus, the "Thanks" button in each post is designed for the vBulletin Style, meaning it wouldn't look right in any other style unless Valerie or Anthony felt like designing buttons for it. Speaking from personal experience, creating buttons that look like they're supposed to be in a custom style is very difficult when the PSD/PSP file is not included.

That being said, I'm not really for this, but I'm not against it either. I'm fine with just using positive reputation feedback to thank someone for a great post.

Eh honestly its just a public rep system to me.
Not that much better, and it would require mucho work for Valerie and Ant.
Maybe even the semi active Ben

That, along with accepting/denying the suggested modification, is up to the headmaster and headmistress to decide.

Personally, with this I just see more ways for social heirarchies to appear on VT. There are two benefits I can see though:

When you give 'thanks' to someone, usually people aren't going to say 'thanks' if someone posts something funny, or whatever, that someone may otherwise rep someone for. Thus making abuse less common, and there would be more incentive not to abuse it with it being common.

As well, each person's thanks is only worth as much as everyone else's. Right now, since many people care so much about rep, the people who are able to increase or decrease someone else's rep power just by repping have some influence. (Not to point fingers or anything along those lines.) With this, there's no way for someone who isn't actually helpful to have a ton of power in the social heirarchy created by these systems.

So, in conclusion, if we have this I think rep should be disabled. If rep was taken away, this might actually be a better system. But, I don't think both should be there. At all.

P.S., I don't like to point out that rep creates a social heirarchy, but to a small extent it is true. Again I in NO way intend to point fingers at anyone here.

I agree with Rex on this. I'm not a huge fan of rep...as I think it does create a type of social heirachy. And I don't like that.
But we can debate if we need rep for ever and I doubt that anyone will agree. But if we had the 'thanks' thing, we don't need both do we?

Just a thought.

Simple solution: If you want to give thanks to *whoever*, just type out the words "Thank You!". Direct, honest, transparent, to the point, not requiring any special technology or reflective of anything other than sincerity.

But the idea of this is to stop people posting two word replies. Reputation doesn't show how helpful a user is, it shows that their posts are liked by other users.

The thanks system is a very good way of showing how helpful someone is, it also helps to reduce spam and just works very well, on every forum I've seen it used on.

For replies, I don't remember seeing only a "Thank you," for most case. Normally, if a person wants to thank someone else, a common reply may be, "Thanks! I was wondering about this a few weeks ago," or, "Awesome advice. But what do you mean by 'eating soup with a fork?'" or some other phrase/sentence/paragraph after a comment of praise.

Also, reputation shows how reputable a person is. And reputation is usually given for helpful, quality posts. Those who give reputation because they thought something was funny or clever would still use the thanks modification in the same way. Those who abuse the reputation system to gain more reputation would do the same for thanks.

OOH! I like that. Headmaster and headmistriss! It reminds me of Hogwarts

Okay, so my quote "VT is like an online version of highscool" is now going to be changed to "VT is like an online version of Hogwarts" anyways....

Also, I can see how this system could work dually with the rep system, since technically the rep system has a different purpose of being on here

So you want VT to have houses now do you????
Actually that would be awesome, one leader would be ant and the other val.

But anywho...I think Sam meant that people can just say, 'thanks guys' or 'thanks dude that helped'. And echoing sam, does the site honestly need another button??
I'm in the middle really. But leaning.
