Default can a therapist keep this confidential?

I've had a therapist for a while and I trust her very much but I've only ever been to her for my awful anxiety...but I started cutting 6 months ago. I'm trying to stop, and I want to tell, but I'm worried that she will be required to tell my parents.

Doesn't it fall into the same category as planned harm to yourself/others?

Theapist are trained (atleast where I'm from) to keep tyhings to themselves unless it has to do with suicide and homicide.

I'll move this for you. You can always report it by clicking the triangle with the line in the bottom left corner of your post, and a mod will take care of it for ya.

Eating Disorders Cutting & Self Harm

Also, to answer your question, I believe it varies state to state (or country etc). I know in mine, my therapist and GP both could keep self harm confidential, but anything beyond that they couldn't. Unless I was really posing a suicidal threat (which self harm /generally/ isn't considered), it's confidentiable. You'd have to check about the laws for your particular location though, as I can't say. Best of luck to you. x

As Val says it totally depends on the therapist and probably also the severity of your self-harm. If you're cutting is deep enough to cause real concern for your safety then they probably will have to tell, but if they're more superficial and less dangerous cuts then maybe not.

And this is how the tale begins.
Its your life, exist and wonder why.

It only fails to work sometimes

I'm from Scotland and I know that for councillors, doctors and teachers here can't tell anyone unless there is a serious danger for your safety and wellbeing

Therapists are legally obligated to keep everything you tell them confidential. The only exception is when they believe you might commit suicide or hurt somebody else. In which case, they might alert the authorities, call your parents, or anyone they think you might hurt.

i think it differs depending on the therapist mine never told on me when i did and i don't think most will as long as your parents know that u have down it before most don't care but if they don't know i cant really say truthfully either way make sure to talk with them they can only help if u tell them whats going on

cutting as far as it is no danger for your life isnt a problem which your therapist has to tell to anyone. In fact the therapist lose its job for telling sb. But if you attempt anything to die or to hurt sb your therapist has to tell your parents and the psychatric hospital where you have to go to. If the doctor there thinks its dangerous you will be admit to hospital.

As many people have said before counselors are bound by confidentiality. At least here in California the only have to report if you are planning suicide, harming others, etc. My therapist knew about my cutting and never reported and never told my dad about it unless I asked her too. But it could be different where you are from. And, when I was cutting it was an extensive amount during a 24 hour period. She still kept the confidentiality. I hope that answers your questions.

Edit: Ugh wrong forum category...how do I change it?
After reading some responses, I'm pretty sure it varies from state to state and perhaps even clinic to clinic. I have been to three different clinics, going to my forth in less than a month or so, and they all had different policies. My most recent former therapist could not keep it confidential if I was cutting or bruising myself. Unfortunately, I made that mistake. He wanted to keep me safe while also not wanting to jeopardize his license so he brought in my parents and told them. Ever since then things have been hidden.
My therapist before him, however, kept my self harm confidential.

If you want to find out your confidentiality rights, ask her the next time you see her - it's the best way to get an answer without risking anything. Just ask her, "What things do you keep confidential and what things do you have to inform my parents about?"
Hope this helps!~
