Default "Reset" threads

I've noticed a lot of popular stickied threads that have high post counts have been remade, leaving the originals locked to slowly filter into the back pages.

Is there a legitimate reason for doing so (server space issues, content rendering issues, etc), or is it just for ascetics? I personally feel that closing the old threads and starting new ones of the exact same topic breaks the continuity a bit...

In a nutshell, having really really big threads makes everything explode. Admins don't do it because of the fun of it, and I'm not too good at explaining, but just thinking of it as big threads=Make things explode.

Having too many threads with 10,000+ posts isn't good because it clogs up the server tables and takes longer to run scripts, update tables/counters, and isn't good for the server load in general.

This is understandable, but not quite.
Even if they are locked, and still have 10,000+ posts, wouldn't they still affect the server? And then, continuing to make a new one that will most likely have 10,000+ posts? Wouldn't it be just the same having a 20,000+ post thread, as it would having two separate 10,000+ posts thread? The only difference is ones locked, but still there?

We're locking them at 10,000 so they don't get anywhere near 15,000 or 20,000
And no, having 10 threads at 10,000 posts is doable for the server, having 5 threads at 20,000 posts is pushing it. It's not the sum of all of the posts that I'm concerned about, it's the processing of each individual thread by the server. The bigger each one is, the longer it will take, and the longer it takes the more resources are being used. It's not going to break the server, we're preparing it better for longevity.
