Default why not just auto-lock old topics

http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/sh....php?t=2035797

hi, what i thought was kind funny was i come to this section and see that nearly all the suggestion topics are more than two months, so nobody say anything more without getting yelled at for being stupid. is its like tempting people to break the rules, just so that they can get yelled at for breaking the rules...lol

maybe somehow auto-lock old topics with a message explaining the topic is too old and no further messages are allowed. just a suggestion, but i suspect i will get yelled at anyway...lol

I've skim read that thread, and it wouldn't be beneficial to auto-lock since the OP can always bump the thread regardless of when the last post was. This is helpful if the OP wants to ask for more advice on the same post after a long time has passed. If this was the case a lot of time it would be better than having multiple threads from continuations of the thread by the OP.

The OP is allowed to bump their own threads. However they are not if someone else bumps it. Idk why.

its ok if its A, or its D, but never ever if its B, C or X, unless V=A and K=D, except on thursdays, when its never OK...lol.

overall it doesn't really matter, people are going to get yelled at no matter what, and trying to understand why just means you get yelled at for trying to understand, just like at school when a person asks for permission to use the restroom, and the answer is "why didn't you go between classes, so you can wait 15 minutes"

I'm just wondering how you can get yelled at at some place where all conversations take place in written form??

The whole rules thing doesn't seem too hard if you just pay some tiny bit of attention. Compared to the number of users around here the number of users who does not get this bumping rule is rather small.

Nobody gets killed for bumping threads so really don't see a big deal here.

It’s not too hard to understand that the Original Poster can bump their own thread past the 2 month inactivity limit. If you did not start the thread and the 2 months have past, you cannot post in it.

It’s very. Very simple.

Yes and suggestions are of course always appreciated @devotionnel explained why it would be difficult and told you that suggestions and questions are fine nevertheless.

So I'm not really sure what else should be discussed here after that.

Pardon me for stepping in...

To address the original suggestion: it's a good one. It would save all of us a lot of trouble if threads could be auto-locked at two months with some sort of exception for the OP. Unfortunately, from a logistical standpoint, this doesn't work out so well - not only is auto locking, to my knowledge, not possible in vB (so we'd have to go and do it manually and I'm sure I don't need to outline the issues with that), but we want to keep that exception for the OP, as mentioned. So, yeah, to keep the forums current and relevant, we have to go through this whole bumping rule nonsense mostly because there's no better solution.

In defense of my fellow staff, nobody is deliberately being so aggressive as to "yell" at you (I know that you don't mean that literally, don't worry ). They're just trying to be professional and assertive, especially because this suggestion has come up on numerous occasions before - which is okay, you shouldn't feel discouraged from making suggestions for any reason. Things change, after all. But I think our answers do become a little bit rehearsed in cases like this, where we really can't take the suggestion for whatever reason (in this case, logistics).

Hayley, please don't take it personally. As I've said in the past, I appreciate members like you who care enough about the site to go out of their way to make suggestions at all. We wouldn't get anywhere otherwise. Unfortunately, we can't accept this particular suggestion, but do please keep thinking of ways to improve the site. There's always room for betterment. And if you're ever uncomfortable posting it publicly, you can always PM me or another staff member with your thoughts.

I can promise you that nobody's upset and nobody means to be harsh with you. I'm sorry if you've felt otherwise. Nobody should be made to feel like they're being censured for trying to be helpful - but also, nobody should be accused for trying to do their jobs.

I guess the OP could message a mod to unlock their own locked thread. Not sure if that is how it works.

Maybe have topics that are too old automatically become a different color, that way it easy to see which one are OK.
