Default Hair and puberty

So I went to a pool party last Sunday, and all the guys took their shirts off because water, anyways, I couldn't help but notice that one of my friends who just turned 15 already had a very visible happy-trail and noticeable hair on his nipples. I have a not-really-visible-at-all happy trail and no hair on my chest. So my question is: is chest hair and such an indicator of how far into puberty you are?

I don't think it is no. I have some hair on my chest and I'm not too far into puberty but I know people who have finished who are virtually hairless. I think it's like If u have it, u do and if u don't then u don't

I think it depends more on your genetics. If you come from a hairy family, that's what you'll be. I think it's determined a little bit by how old you are, but it's specific to you in that regard.

It's more in genetics I think. I have a visible happy trail, hair around my nipples and hair in between and on my pecs.

I think it's a combination of genetics and how far you are into puberty. Depending on your genetic line you might have less chest hair in general, but it does tend to happen later in puberty so in some cases it could be an indicator.

Well you're 18 so I'd imagine that if you were going to get a happy trail you would have at least the beginnings of one so my guess is that you're genetics mean that you're not going to get one at all.

It's in your genetics. If your dad doesn't have that much chest hair shirtless, you probably wont either

You might be in luck. The other comparison would be with either grandfather.

Ok. I'd be fine with a little bit…it's more of the fact that he could be farther into puberty despite being 3 years younger. It just bothers me a little bit.

no, some people naturally have less hair than others, even when already through puberty

I think chest hair usually comes pretty late in puberty but some guys never get it. I got a trail at 14 and nipple hair at 15, didn't get chest hair until almost 18 but my dad doesn't have anything but a little nipple hair so I was surprised.

Nope, my grandpa and dad is smooth and hairless while I am hairy af. Hairy don't indicate how far you into puberty.

I would guess it is a good indication about a person's stage of puberty. But some guys just don't grow that much hair. So it is a genetic thing.

You remind me of something that happenned to me. I was an earlier developer and at one point I had a reasonable amount of under-arm hair and many of the guys had none but then some of them ended up with like a forest there, more than I had. That doesn't mean they had "overtaken" me it was more a case of they just come from a family where their genes mean more hair.

Likewise I have some chest hair and my dad has none. That doesn't mean his puberty stopped and I overtook him it just means his side of the family doesn't have as much hair and I must get it from my mum's side of the family. And yes, you can inherit male characteristics from your mum. Even characteristics that are not expressed in female because they are only "turned on" by testosterone are still there in the genes to be passed on.

So, androgenic hair, i.e. public, under-arm, trail, leg, chest and beard only grows under the influence of testosterone so getting any of those proves you have developed to a certain point and they do seem to follow an order but there is also the genetic angle so trying to judge your progress by comparing hair with others is a bit unreliable.
