Default Question?

If I told my counsellor that I was thinking about cutting/suicide, but wasn't cutting, would he be obliged to tell my parents?

Trans guy / PM if you want to talk. I'll try to help.

Your counselor is obliged to tell your parents if he thinks you're a danger to yourself or others. He probably wouldn't tell them if you were cutting, but he most likely would have to tell them if you're contemplating suicide.

That being said, they have to tell your parents these things for a good reason. If you're thinking about suicide, you should definitely tell someone so you can get help.

It's not that I'm thinking ABOUT suicide, about doing it. I think about would people really miss me? Would they care?

My youth worker, my GP and the psychotherapist my mum took me to never said a word to my parents about anything I didn't want them to. I'd told them all that I cut. Maybe ask your counsellor about his confidentiality policy, that way you'll know how he'll react. If you haven't actually cut and you're just thinking about it, then technically no one can actually do anything 'cause nothings happened. So I think you should be okay there, he'll probably just keep checking how things are going and how you've been handling the thoughts. It's better to just be honest with him, that way he can help you.

I agree with ThePretender, it's definitely better to be honest with him. Right now, he's probably the one that you should be most honest with. You should ask him about his privacy policies, my psychiatrist (don't have a therapist yet) would tell my parents. He thinks that nothing's a secret. To tell you honestly, I kind of don't like that, but I get it. So yeah, it's up to you though.

"When we cut, we're in control - we make our own pain and we can stop it whenever we want. Physical pain relieves mental anguish. For a brief moment, the pain of cutting is the only thing in the cutter's mind, and when that stops and the other comes back, it is weaker."

I still think it's better to tell him about these things. It could end up helping you in the long run.
