It's the same in my school as well. American English is no-no. Very easy to slip up.

We were taught UK English as well.
Since we much more likely have to communicate with British companies than with American (or Australian, South African or other English speaking countries) companies, it makes sense to speak and write UK English for Europeans.
We get at least 5 years of mandatory English classes at school, but the best way to learn a (new) language is by doing it and participating in it. And while posts on an internet forums aren't always grammatically correct (even the ones made by native English speakers..), they are a good way to practice reading, writing and understanding the language.
