Default How important is it to have a job before you finish school?

I'm currently 17 (turning 18 about a month) and next year is my last year of school. As of now I've never had a job, although I'm hoping of getting a part time job over the summer holidays. What I want to know is how important is it that I have a job before I finish high school? Will it be much harder to get a job after high school or will getting a job now just make things slightly easier? I'm planning on getting a part time job or even doing volunteer work for the experience.

I don't think it is a huge deal to get a job during high school. It would be good experience, but it would be just as good as if you did it after you graduated. I don't see why an employer would be less likely to hire you after you graduate, if anything they would be more willing because you would now have a high school diploma. So yeah, I would encourage you to get a job, but it wouldn't make any real difference if you got a job during or after high school.

my brother did tell me once that employers might be less willing to hire me if I was legally an adult because of minimum wage laws making it cheaper to hire minors, but I've also heard that this only happens in part-time jobs that don't usually require a particular skill or qualification.

If you go to college, what you did in high school won't matter at all.
