Default Will the doctor say anything about my SH scars?

So, tomorrow I need to go to the doctors to make an appointment with a GP. The appointment is something personal and TMI that I'd rather not share, but I know for certain it will involve an examination. My main concern is that I will need to remove some clothing that will expose some of my SH scars which are easily noticeable. Most of it is scars but there is some recent scabbing.

Will they say anything about the SH? Will it go on my medical record? Will they tell my parents?

Im really kind of scared about that part. The appointment is crucial, I have to go and cant get out of it. Could anyone please shed some light on it and what I can expect if they do notice?

Hi Shanie, I can understand your concerns and in the US it would probably be seen as neglect of duty if the doctor or nurse didn't talk to you about it. However from what I understand a teen over a certain age is allowed to have privacy regarding certain things in their medical records. They may be kind and understand it's an emotional issue and not life threatening, and that's the approach I'd take and the explanation I'd give them would be along those lines. They may have no other choice than to include it in your records, but your parents may not have access to those records, and they may not be obligated to report it to anyone if you are 17. I would def tell the nurse when (s)he gets you undressed for your examination that you have some personal emotional issues going on which result in your visible scars that you want kept private, and see what (s)he says about that. You'll need to get full and further details from the doctor and nurse(s) that you will be dealing with during your exam.

I'll tell you from experience with different issues that I wanted privacy about, that they are usually very clear in communicating what they are required to do by law, and what they don't have to share with your parents or other authority figures. At 15 I can have private therapy appointments for my emotional issues if that's what I want, and my parents don't have access to the records unless I give permission which in my case I give because I need my parents to be aware of my issues and what we are discussing during my therapy.

I'm open to discussing this in further detail with you in a PM if you want to, I'll be gone for a while but promise to reply to you later on.

Here after you turn 15, only you and you alone have access to your medical record.

Thanks for the replies you two

I had my appointment earlier today, and no comments were made about my SH, I doubt it was even noticed from the angle she was looking at.

I will keep the info you posted in mind for the future if I need to visit the doctor again.

@bougainvillea I've never been put in that situation before, but I can empathize with your fear and I'm so glad the appointment went smoothly I've found that doctors typically ignore things that don't pertain to what you're seeing them for, or just give them a passive glance, so although I understand your anxiety over getting comments on your scars, I would try to not to be too concerned in the future (and definitely not show your nerves to the doctor).
