Default Reporting members - a new method

Hi,

I realize there are many ways to report a member on the site already in place (e.g. the options to report posts, VMs, and PMs). However, I think there's a slight inconvenience that these options don't cover:

Members who haven't posted or sent any VMs have no content to report. There's nothing wrong with sending staff members a PM - after all, they can't see everything, so it's part of their responsibility to respond to non-staff members when they report a rule breakage. But I think having a "Report Member" button on user profiles is a more efficient, direct way to report someone who fits into the criteria I mentioned above. PMs can get overlooked by mistake, so additionally, these reports would be permanently logged and quickly accessible to all the staff.

Thoughts? Criticisms? I'd especially like to hear from the staff, and any other members who have encountered a similar situation.

Sounds good. Other forums I have been on have had report buttons for users, so I see no reason why VT can't have them. As you stated, PM reports can often be over-looked, and often-times they are just sent to a single staff member, resulting in unilateral decisions rather than a group decision.

I haven't sent many personal reports, mainly because there isn't really an effective way to do it. The few reports I have sent either get no response at all, or I get a clearly unilateral response from a single staff member, that usually consists of some condescension and annoyance. Having a way to report users to all the staff members would be very helpful in that regards.

This would certainly be handy. I don't know the limits of vB and all that, but if such a feature existed I wouldn't be opposed to it.

This is a great idea, I come across so many profiles of people who have been members for years, and never posted, never even a vm. But they still log in and somehow make “friends”
Seems really weird to me

The main thing I was getting at is inappropriate stuff in the About Me section, links to websites with explicit content, or advertisements/endorsements in either of those forms. But I agree with you - that's really suspicious, too.

I think it might be somewhat unfair to certain people. Singling people out because they seem like candidates for inappropriate behavior seems a little unfair. The way it is now, there is a good system I think, that allows members to report inappropriate activity. It's more of a learning lesson for rule offenders. I get that some "bad eggs" aren't going to change and are unable to be helped.
But by reading others comments, this suggestion does make sense and has good reason behind it.

I'm not saying we should single out candidates. The purpose is to report an actual rule breakage for a member who hasn't posted any content. For example, if someone had in their bio they're a salesperson and linked their website to get business, or if someone had things like masturbation listed in their interests, which is against the rules. Overage members would fall into this category, too.

I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear in my initial post. It's meant to make reporting rule violations easier, not to be used out of suspicion.

I like this idea. I've reported such members in PM to admins before with good feedback, but something like this would make the process easier.

I'd also point out that staff are the only ones who see anything reported. Getting reported does not 100% guarantee that any action will be taken.

The report system is a stock feature on vBulletin. There are a few addons for it but not one for reporting a profile, it is just not offered. Doing this would mean a custom addon would have to be made, which gets kind of complicated. I just don't think it's really feasible, and if you want to report a member for something other than posts, VMs, or PMs, you can always just send a private message to a staff member.
Good idea, but making a custom addon for this would be a lot of work and would likely involve a third party developer.

You could also report a VM on their profile with just a message saying 'Can you review X on their profile'.

It's a good suggestion though

Why not report a suspicion? If it’s a valid concern....maybe staff should be made aware of it. Sometimes gut instincts mean something. I know you can’t not take any recourse based on one members suspicion, but if the behavior is suspicious, with good merit, someone should know

I never said people can't report out of gut instinct. I do it myself, and often the reports turn out to be valid, and if not, better safe than sorry. I was responding to @West Coast Sheriff, who brought up how it could be unfair to single out candidates just because they seem suspicious. The method I suggested is targeted at users who haven't posted any content yet, so it can only be used if there's an evident violation on their profile.

As with many of the replies here, I think that this feature could be incredibly handy, and would look into it if it was possible. However, as Mike stated, unless we built such thing by hand, it wouldn't be possible, and to build such would be no easy feat, especially given the older VBulletin that we run.

It's never a burden to drop any of us a PM so that we can look into it/properly handle it; and it's even something that we encourage. See something, say something.

When you report someone, you need to make sure that the person you are reporting has actually done something that you are concerned of. Even then, just because you may be concerned about a particular issue, does not mean that action will be taken. After all, I would assume that you would need sufficient evidence in order to take action against the report. This is a great topic. But in the end, it is better to be safe then sorry

Tell me something and I will listen. Ask me something and I will help.

I don't know if this answer will completely satisfy all of the issues that this site has, cause it has many as far as inconsistency of what is or isn't allowed, rude admins that are annoyed if you report something, etc. I also think that the admin team should be expanded as the current admins are not able to manage the site on their own.

I don't think Amethyst's goal was to solve all of our problems with a quick "profile report" feature. At any rate, I'm responding because I sense this is a bigger topic that should not be discussed in this thread. You're welcome to create your own thread about it (for a respectful discussion or with constructive suggestions/feedback) or PM a staff member.

You are correct in this, however, there’s one important thing. That addon was made for VB 4.2.X, and we run VB 3.8.9 currently, with no plans of upgrading, at least right now, so that puts that, and a handful of other addons out of the question.
