Default GF convicted of encouraging her bf to kill himself.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...t-jail-n970111

I saw this on TV. The gf was texting her depressed bf as he was thinking about killing himself; she was encouraging him to go through with it, even though he texts her back saying he is unsure if he wants to. She says dumb stuff like "Why wait?". She even tells him how to kill himself. He kills himself within minutes of her last text.

Should it be a crime if someone "encourages" another person to kill themselves and the person dies, even if they don't directly help or force Her lawyer said "It was just a poor choice of texting", she never actually did anything to help him, all she did was sent him some text messages with suggestions on how to kill himself and encouraged him to go through with it, not thinking he would actually do it.

The prosecutor's claim was some kind Munchausen syndrome by proxy type of thing. She wanted the attention she would get of having a bf who killed himself. Just a theory, but she did lie to the police about her text messages, she told them she was trying to stop him, but once they got to read the messages, it was clear she wasn't trying to stop him, she was wanted him to kill himself.

Kinda like if someone is standing on the edge of cliff, should it be against the law to keep yelling "Jump, Jump, Jump" over and over to the person who is thinking about killing themself?

Oh, she sent tips and words of encouragement to her suicidal and depressed boyfriend and didn’t expect him to attempt to kill himself? Fucking idiot.

Yes, it should be a crime. If you’re helping then it’s borderline assisted murder

Yes, it's a crime. She should be seeking help for him instead of encouraging him to take his own life.

Definitely a crime, that's a no-brainer.

Yes I would say it’s a crime she was involved in what happened

Yes I think it should be a crime, and the very least, we should all recognise that this girl is a cancerous cunt and deserves to burn in hell. It disgusts me how evil and vile some people can be

It should undoubtedly be a crime. She actively encouraged him to kill himself and therefore, when he actually did, it's not unfair to then implicate her in his death. No matter he intentions, she maliciously took advantage of a vulnerable individual and caused him to commit the ultimate act of self-harm.

Agree with the above. While it's not easy to suggest that a person caused another person's suicide, in this case, she actively encouraged him to do it and bears some responsibility for his action.

Assistet suicide. It's a crime, and she should be punished for that.

I've followed this case closely. What was just announced was the denial of the appeal, but the trial was over a year ago.

When I first read about the case, I thought people should be responsible for their own actions, despite this girl being a truly rotten person.
Then I looked up the definition of what she was being charged with (which included 'reckless and wanton conduct') and it described exactly what she did, so I believe the guilty verdict was right.

This is a girl who encouraged him to kill himself, believing if she was grieving, people would befriend her. At one point he got out of the car and garage and she badgered him to go back in and finish what he started.

Unfortunately, the ACLU is supporting her, claiming it's freedom of speech.
I'm a big fan of free speech, but everyone knows there are limits to it.

I'm glad she was convicted and her appeal was turned down.

As for whether or not 15 months is an appropriate sentence, it's difficult to say. It's important to keep in mind she wasn't convicted of killing him, but of reckless and wanton conduct. And there aren't many cases with these circumstances from which to compare sentences. Plus, she was a minor when she committed the crime. It seems a little light, but tbh, I have difficulty separating the weight of the true legal issue from my disgust for her as a human being.

The guy wanted to kill himself, and rather than telling a desperate him out of it, she encouraged him to do it. Its like she pulled the trigger. She may pretty much have been the difference that led to his death rather than stay alive. So you're damn right that's a crime

Is 15 months the right amount of time, if not, then what punishment would be better given the circumstances?

I can rationalize her behavior. Depressed people can get really annoying.
