Default What can I do?

Today my Dr told me I was way underweight for my age and height. I eat healthy and I eat a lot, but yet she told me I was underweight. How can I gain weight?

Eat more foods that are high in carbs. Also, try a little weight lifting...muscle is heavier than fat, so if you build a little more muscle, you can gain a little weight, but still look lean/thin.

Don’t try and do unhealthy weight gain, because that can lead to a whole host of problems with your blood and circulatory system. As above, I would recommend eating more carbs like bread and pasta and some of the good fats, like avocados, cheese and fish.

You could also ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist, one appointment will get you lots of information on the healthy ways to eat that can give you a slow and well controlled weight gain. You def don't want to go too fast. Adding something like a protein shake every day is one possibility.

I have exactly the opposite situation, my doctor told me several months ago when I weighed about 160 that I was overweight for my height, I'm currently at over 180, but we now know it's due to the meds I'm on so nothing can really be done about it.

Thank you for all your help. I have been eating lots of breads, pastas and I understand that potatoes helps also as they have a lot of starch. I'm not losing any wait but I'm not gaining either.

I think as long as you're healthy then that's what really matters. You'll probably naturally gain some weight as you get a bit older. You might weight less than other girls your age/height but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I agree with what everyone said above with eating more carbs like load up on breads(bagels are great), pasta, cheese, potatoes. You also might want to increase your portion sizes at your meals. Still stay away from empty calories and junk food though.

Eat Ben and jerry’s Ice cream a pint a week, for dessert after all those carbs.

At one point in life your body will start taking in what you eat and you'll be able to put on weight. If you start a habit taking to fatter foods now, it will be difficult for you, when your body starts reacting differently.
I do not suggest you don't do that. But maybe do some sports where the body has to put on some more muscle and not fat, which you body will flush out anyway

I have gained a little weight since then, but not as much as my family Dr. would like. She has referred me to a special dietitian. The 8 pounds that I have gained ,I seemed to loose.

I'm also like you. I eat a lot but don't seem to gain weight. We're called ectomorphs. I used to be really skinny but in the past year I've gone up about 9kg which isn't massive but it's something. To gain weight we need to consume more calories than we burn which is called caloric surplus. Consume foods like nuts, full-fat dairy, potatoes, pasta, etc. If you can't consume huge portions split it up into 5 small meals or make smoothies. I use an app called MyFitnessPal to keep a track of how many calories I consume a day and it's been very useful. I also recommend going to the gym or performing calisthenics at home which will build muscle.
