Unhappy ahhhhhh!

one of the kids in my school has had the stomach virus (he's been out for a few days), he is still sick and he tried to come back to school today and he blew his nose like right next to my bookbag, then left to go back to the nurse. i wasnt near him when he did that but my bag was. he didn't touch anything either. but will I get sick too? I'm scared of the stomach virus. like really bad. I'm constantly washing my hands, so I didn't touch my face until my hands were clean anyway (same with eating today). then I came home and I lysoled my bag. am I safe?

The answer is that you're safe.

Droplet infection (the airborne droplets that are spread when you sneeze) only communicates virus/bacteria that are airborne, typically upper respiratory and sinus infections, colds, the flu, etc. Stomach nasties are not airborne, they're usually transmitted thru the mouth. Think: The most direct route out of the body the bacteria/virus travels, and that's how you could transmit (or catch) it. So, if he spit on your bag and you touched it, and put that hand in your mouth, you'd get it. But, if he sneezed near you, then you're OK, b/c stomach stuff cannot get into a sneeze. You could catch a cold, however, if he had one, but that's a diff story.

You're absolutely correct about frequent hand washing, it is THE best thing you can do to prevent infections of just about any kind! In this case, though, I'd say you're taking adequate precautions and should be OK.
