Default Auto-Locking Old Forums

On another forum I've been on, month-old threads are automatically closed and so there's no bumping old threads. My question is couldn't we do the same for this fourm? That way, you needn't worry about accidentially posting into a thread that's too old and everything you see on your page will be newish.

That, plus it doesn't look good for a forum to have a lot of locked threads.

In addition to what's been mentioned above, some threads, such as stickies are always ok to post in regardless of the last post.

Most people can remember to look at the date of the last post, anyways, even if they do occasionally bump something. The only big bumping problems occur with new members who don't know the rules.

And if you see a bump you can always report it and its locked up in no time. there aren't that many bumps so it really isn't a huge deal.

But surely those threads won't be visible on the first page because they're too old?

It doesn't need to include stickies at all though. We could make an exception for those.

If that's the case, then why not make an exception for bumping from the OP (after which others can now post) but not anyone else?

i understand the point being made and i do know that thread bumping is a problem. however i do believe that the annoyance of reporting/locking old threads outweighes the good of leaving them. because what happens if the original poster wants to give an update about a situation they asked help for a month later and can't? thats one example of why i wouldn't want that. i see the point you are making, and its a good one. but i persoanally don't like that idea.

As I said, you could make an exception for the OP. Apart from anything else, whenever someone (except the OP) bumps an old thread, it's locked anyway. This then ruins it for the OP, which is supposed to be always able to bump their own threads, but now can't because its locked to everyone because someone else bumped it wheras if they didn't, they would be allowed to bump their own thread. See where I'm going? By having a system whereby a thread is auto-locked until the OP bumps (and thus unlocks for another month) it, you are eradicating this problem.

Making it so only the OP could post would be a pain in the ass.

You're missing the point though. Once the OP bumps (assuming it's more than a month old), everyone can post again, as I've already said. That way, the OP can always post without worrying about their thread from becoming locked because someone bumping it instead of them.

However, it's obvious that my suggestion has been rejected (I'm not complaining; it's your choice after all), and so I won't continue this thread for any longer. You can lock this if you like.

Youère missing the point too. Making it so only the OP can post, and then everyone else can post, that is still a pain in the ass.

it would take too much twitching of the system, therefore a pain in the ass for those who have to do it. aka Admins, and they already have a lot to work on on their own,
the system how it is, isn't perfect, but it's manageable, and us mods don't mind it so much.

Besides, if everyone read the rules, how they are supposed to, it shouldnt be an issue.

Not it wasn't. AllThatIsLeft said that the problem was the administraitors being unable to do it wheras you said that the problem was that it would be a pain in the arse, even though there's no reason for that to be true that I've heard yet. Regardless, it's obvious that this is not going to be done and so I find little point in discussing this matter any further because it will get nowhere. This topic may as well be locked now.
