Question How to cover scars with makeup?

Hey guys this is my first post so if I really have no idea what I'm doing but I was wondering if anybody knows a good way to cover self harm scars on arms with makeup and how to make it looks as natural as possible. I haven't cut in about three years and I'm in a lot better place in life and I recently got my first job but I have to wear a uniform with short sleeves and I just feel embarrassed whenever anybody sees my scars. I only have one big one that's raised and the rest are pretty small and lighter than my skin tone so they're not red or anything so I was thinking "oh these won't be hard to cover up" i could not be any more wrong I had heard good things about Hard Candy glamoflauge concealer so I thought I would give it a try keep in mind I'm a guy who has never worn makeup a day in my life so I also don't even know what I'm doing all I know is when I use it it turns out just a little bit too light even though I have the darkest shade available which is tan and I'm half Mexican half white so I thought it would match but apperently not and it also looks really cakey and obvious that I'm trying to cover the scars that are still visible just not as much as they would be without any makeup so sorry for making this super long but does anybody know any good products that are fairly cheap and work well to cover scars or have any tips on how to apply makeup because I really have no idea what i'm doing I could just not be blending it I really don't know so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Covering scars on your body is always rather tricky. Even more if you wanna use low priced make up products. This is even more true if you have a darker skin tone.

Personally I wouldn't cover the scars...I never cover any of my scars since they are part of me and I have to live with them...but if you really feel bad about them you need a professional to help you I think.

Someone who shows you how to best work it and what combination of products you will need as I'm sure you'll never managed to really can cover them using just one single product. And further I'm sure it will only look okay with high priced stuff.

So obviously I'm not a make up artist or anything and I don't wear make up myself. But as I witness the hassle my female friends sometimes have just covering up a little spot on their faces I think it will be a hard thing to cover scars on the body and making this last the whole work day.

So if you ask me I'm in favour of just showing scars, you will learn to be okay with it and most otherside won't think about your scars anyway.

Of course like Peanut said it can help you get used to showing scars if you leave them bare plus it can take a lot of time/effort each morning.

But I understand that you want help with the topic so I would recommend proper sfx makeup foundation. It's made to last for a long amount of time i.e. body painting competitions. I'm not sure how expensive it is though.

I also saw a specialist foundation on a YouTube video (I tried to find it but it was deleted + also contained triggering content) designed for raised scars. I'll try and find the exact one a bit later since I noticed it was really effective and it looked like there was nothing there.

Another foundation you can use: it is specifically designed for legs and body so I feel it would be ideal for heavy coverage that should last the whole work shift. However I'm not sure on the shade range so it might be hard to find your colour and it might be seen as a bit expensive.

Another solution is that you could ask the manager discreetly if you could wear a black undershirt (kinda like a thermal layer shirt) since it wouldn't look too unflattering under a t-shirt or polo. There is 1 or 2 people at my work who are allowed to do this so maybe you could give this a try and use the makeup as a last resort.

Also keep in mind depending on where the scars are on your arms it may be difficult to cover with makeup if hair grows like the upper side of the arm. Furthermore if you are busy moving things etc the foundation could rub off onto other things so keep this in mind too.

i tried to cover my scars with makeup the day they were first noticed by anyone. the person thought they were infected (they weren't) because the concealer made them look like they were oozing, granted they were still in the sore stage then.

i know this isn't the answer you want, but i strongly suggest you get used to them being out in the open, most people won't notice anyway. it's impossible to seamlessly cover scars with makeup because of the nature of scar tissue. you're not just dealing with color, the texture of scar tissue just does not match the rest of your skin. makeup will only bring more attention to them.

i personally find that it helps to have a "what's it to you" kind of attitude about all my scars or freckles or any other aspect of my appearance. you don't need to be nervous when someone asks about or glances at your scars (both of which will rarely happen) because your business is your own.

If you want to use make up to cover your scars, you should try as hard as you can to find a foundation/concealer that is exactly your skin tone. This will make it less noticeable that you have make up on your arms, which in turn will draw attention to your scars. Use a waterproof primer or spray if possible to keep the make up from transferring. For any red coloured scars using a green toned concealer before will help erase the redness. Finally, make sure you don't cake the make up on. Even if you can still see the scars a little it is better that than to have an arm covered in make up
