Question I want to go to psychiatrist (psychologist?) for diagnosis, but not for medication

I want to go to psychologist for diagnosis and possible individual therapy, but I'm worried they'll give me medicine. I believe my schizophrenia is bearable without medication, but I think that I would benefit from talking to a psychologist and getting diagnosed so I know it's schizophrenia and not something else (though I'm pretty positive it is schizophrenia... though, from what I've been told, I can't self-diagnose myself). So, if I went, would they put me on medication, or am I safe to go without medication? x: should I go at all, from what you know about it not being bad enough to be put on medication? If you want me to explain my symptoms I can, just tell me to. Thanks

Symptoms of schizophrenia often overlap with symptoms of other mental health disorders, like bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Because there is so much overlap, you really don't know for sure if you have schizophrenia unless diagnosed.

And the only way to treat schizophrenia is with medication, though you can try CBT the real recovery comes from medication, so if you are diagnosed chances are you will be put on medication before being put in any therapy.

You can definitely, without question, begin having therapy sessions without taking medicines. If you don't want them, you don't have to take them. Bottom line.

But realize, they will likely suggest that you do try them, and it may not be a bad idea, but if you don't want to and aren't comfortable with the idea, then that's that. End of story But the pressure might be there. If you haven't tried it, it's always worth a shot. If it doesn't help, you can abandon them. But I'd give them a solid 6 months to a year before deciding, if you want to try it.

But definitely, any psychologist (who would give you therapy sessions, not a psychiatrist) will respect your decision, but will repeatedly offer you the possibility just so you know it's there. It's all good!

Best of luck! - Living With Schizophrenia
