Try and take your mind off it by doing something like drawing (I usually just end up scribbling frantically). Try and draw a picture of how you feel in your head and then rip it up into little pieces.

Like @Kacchon said, drawing the 'tattoos' does tend to help. Drawing butterflies or other small pictures where you would normally cut could discourage you from doing it because you ruin the art or 'kill' the butterfly.
