House arrest for mother who sexually assaulted son
An Edmonton mother has been sentenced to house arrest for sexually assaulting her own son and sending pictures to an Ottawa man she met online.
The 38-year-old woman, who can't be identified to protect her son, pleaded guilty in May.
A statement of fact in the case says the woman, who uses a wheelchair and has cerebral palsy, met the man on a website dedicated to bondage, sadism and masochism.
During their three-year relationship, the man persuaded her to assault and photograph her son, who was six at the time. Her son is no longer in her care.
Judge Mary Moreau of the Court of Queen's Bench sentenced the woman to two years, less a day, of house arrest, 60 hours community services, as well as three years probation. She is also barred from using the Internet for three months, and will have to provide a sample of her DNA.
Moreau said while conditional sentences are not usually imposed in such cases, the woman's severe disabilities would make prison unusually harsh.
Moreau said she also took into consideration the fact that the offence happened only once, and that there was no attempt to distribute the pictures on the Internet.
