Default The Symphony

A symphony plays outside my window.

The slow, steady bass line…

kk-cha-KK…
kk-cha-KK…

Above it, the constant…

chirrrrrp, chirrrrrp,
chirrrrrp, chirrrrrp…

And the high melody…

chirr-UP chirr-UP, chirr-UP,
chirr-UP chirr-UP chirr-UP…

Repeating…over and over

I hear my mother’s laugh, full
and rich, wash over the
melody in an unexpected
bridge.

I hear her deep African soul
in that laugh, a soul which
holds the story of generations
of people living above
oppression and hate.

I think back to Sunday, a
t church…my aunt singing the
sermonic hymn in her sweet
soprano voice, accompanied by
her father, my grandfather, on
the piano.

3 verses…and then for the
last chorus, switching to the
passionate chest voice we
black Christians are so well-
known for…

“And he walks with me, and
he talks with me, and he tells
me I am his own.

And the joys we share, as we
tarry there, none other can
ever know…”

Her voice took the song’s
melody and enriched it with
love, pain, joy, sorrow, all
awakened in the part of me
which is of my ancestors long
gone.

The tears brought to my eyes
were those felt by me and so
many before me, the grief
brought on by losing and the
hope brought on by
surviving…the comfort of
knowing our God is with us.

I listened to the symphony again…

kk-cha-KK…
chirrrrrp, chirrrrrp…
chirr-UP chirr-UP, chirr-UP…

…my mother’s laugh weaving
through it....

…and finally, my aunt’s voice
and my grandfather’s playing
completing an intricate and
complex masterpiece that
makes my heart glad…

“And he walks with me, and
he talks with me…”

I envisioned myself on a path
in the woods…all was dark but
the way in front of me…

“…and he tells me I am his
own…”

The light which showed my
way came from the Holiest of
Holy beings beside me, guiding
me along my slow and weary
journey…

“…And the joys we share, as
we tarry there…”

A sense of peace and
happiness overcame me,
despite the constant obstacles I
faced along the path…I
realized that the good did
indeed outweigh the bad…

“…none other…”

I finally saw the light at the
end of the path…soon the light
I walked in and the light
waiting for me would meet…

“…can ever…”

I reached
out…further…further…and
then…my Lord took it and
welcomed me by saying, “Well
done, my good and faithful
servant.”

“…know.”

kk-cha-KK…
hirrrrrp, chirrrrrp…
chirr-UP, chirr-UP…

Laughter echoing….

The final chord of the piano…

The symphony ends.
