Brush off the copper with some feathers or a dry washcloth. if there's any weird lumps and it's not smooth or if it's a bit discolored, it's a sign of corrosion. Here's a picture of rust (rust is a type of corrosion) on iron/steel:

Make sure it's not dirt. But you're probably fine...don't worry so much.
