For what you'd use it for a single-core Turion-based notebook would do just fine. I'm assuming you mean watching movies, not editing. Go for about a gig of ram if you go with that processor (I'm guessing your model will be at least 2 GHz). If you need to store a lot of music and movies on the hard drive go for around 120 gigs. A decent sound card would be worth the money, along with a good pair of headphones. Go for a large widescreen for the movies. If you plan on using it at a desk more than on-the-go I suggest good speakers and a USB mouse rather than good headphones; both if ya like. On that budget those nice accessories will be easily affordable.
I agree, although most laptops come with Vista now, so if you can afford it 2gb RAM and Dual core is good, even for general use i've seen a huge difference.
