Acne & Facial Care

Hello everyone! I figured that I'd make a blog post dedicated to skincare for those suffering w/ mild-moderate acne. I've previously suffered from acne from age 14-16, it wasn't severe, but it was pretty bothersome. Just a disclaimer, this is what has worked for me, & a few others I've recommended it to. Everyone's skin is different & reacts differently to products.

My skin type is Combination/Oily. My t-zone, forehead & nose (sometimes chin) are oily, but my cheeks & jawline are normal. My main problems with my skin are blackheads & whiteheads. I do not suffer from cystic acne. Cystic acne is more difficult to treat & you should see a dermatologist for the best prognosis. My problem areas vary, when I was younger I mainly broke out around my jaw & lower cheeks, now when I do breakout, which isn't too common for me, is on my forehead.

This is routine I swear by, it hasn't changed in months.
Morning: When I wake up I take a cotton pad & use Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel is a natural toner & is recommended for people w/ oily skin. I use a generic brand that's only $3 for a 32 ounce bottle. If you have dry skin avoid using products with alcohol. This product contains alcohol but it's a minimal amount & works in my favor due to the fact that I have oily skin. Once I finished applying that I wait for it to dry, then I take a moisturizer. Moisturizing is a key component to skincare, regardless if your skin is dry, normal, or oily. I use Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing GEL . It's somewhat pricey, a 4 ounce bottle is about $20, but it will last you 12-18 months, depending on how much you use. The moisturizer comes on different formulations for different skin types. I use the one for oily/combination skin. I only use 1 pump & focus the product on my dry areas, then bring it in to my nose & forehead. CeraVe & Cetaphil are great alternatives for those on a budget.

Night: Before I go to bed I always take a shower, while I'm in the shower I wash my face with Basis Cleaner Clean Face Wash. It's just a basic facial cleanser that doesn't contain irritating ingredients or active ingredients. After that I then exfoliate, but I only exfoliate 1-2 times a week. Please stray away from scrubs that contain harsh beads, these are extremely irritating to the skin & can cause micro-trauma to the skin. I use a clean, very soft rag with Boots No7 Total Renewal Micro-dermabrasion & very lightly buff it into my skin for about 30 seconds then rinse. If you have sensitive skin & microbeads are too harsh you can try a liquid exfoliater, Paula's Choice makes some great ones for every skin type. Once I get out of the shower I take a brand new bobby pin & remove my blackheads. This sounds a little weird but it works great for pesky blackheads on your nose. Only do this about twice a week though. Once you're out of the shower you take a clean bobby pin, you then lightly press the looped end on your nose & slowly drag down your nose. You'll probably see all the sebum trapped in your pores, it's pretty nasty, but cool lol. After I do that I then apply some witch hazel on a cotton ball just on my nose to be sure that every thing is removed. You can skip this step if you don't have blackheads. I then apply Boots Expert Sensitive Hydrating Eye Cream under my eyes, I tend to be very dry & irritated around my eyes because I always rub them. Then I apply some Burt's Bee Lip Balm. Lastly I apply Vaseline to my eyelashes, my lashes tend to dry out so I use Vaseline to keep them moisturized & prevent them from falling out & getting in my eyes lol, that's the worst.
