RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A 9-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in the western Amazon jungle, a pregnancy that authorities say may have been the result of rape, the National Indian Bureau said Friday.
The girl was found in the jungle in April by laborers working on a natural gas pipeline from the Coari oil fields to Manaus, a city of 1.5 million people 1,800 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, said the bureau, known as Funai.
She was taken to Manaus and went into labor on Thursday. The baby, weighing 4.9 pounds, was delivered by Caesarean section and reportedly was in good health, said Daniele Santos of the Funai press office.
The mother, of the Apurina tribe, has refused to speak, and the identity of the infant's father was unknown, Santos said.
"In some cultures it's natural for girls to have sexual relations after their first menstruation, but now we have to study if that was the case here, if their culture permits this," Santos said.
Mother and child were to remain under medical care for a month and then return to their village in Jaturana, about 75 miles from Manaus, she said.
"It's very rare, and we have to investigate whether it was rape," said Marina Mota, a press officer for the National Health Foundation. "The tribe wasn't that isolated, and had a lot of contact" with outside cultures.
National census figures show Brazil has about 700,000 Indians. Most of them live in the northern Amazon rain forest.

So that would have made her (depending on her birthday) 8 years old when she got pregnant. :( thats sad..
It's surprising that a child coming from such a young mother would be in good health. Unless the girl was married, then by morals, it was probably rape, b/c I don't think an 8 year old girl would consent to that...so either she was married, or it was rape. HOWEVER, even if she was married, it still probably was rape, except in that case she would have no rights either way.

 Huh?
If that was the case, then she'd have to have the kid when she was 1 or younger :| If she had her kid at age 9, then when she's 20 the kid would be 11
lol sorry, I made a typo i meant to say 29

You guys don't seem to understand that there are many many cultures throughout the world like this, where girls get married at very young ages. This was probably totally ethical from their point of view. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm for this, but its a different culture. Just because you see something one way doesn't mean the rest of the world has to also.

We're talkin' 'bout a rural tribe though. It's not uncommon for such parctices. I read about one island tribe in the Carribean (a very small island tribe), where when the girl got her period for the first time. All the village men would decide who was her husband. Then at night, they sneak into his hut, snatch him, and carry him home to the girl. Then the two would have sex all night. I guess what's "sad" or "wrong" differs with where you're from.

That is insane :| Though I can see how it's possible, as a girl is born with all the egg cells she'll need throughout her life. :?

Yeah I heard about the girl who gave birth at five aswell, its extreemly weird but like Rooster said, sometimes in different cultures that is acceptable.

I know what other cultures carry, believe me. Even within the past couple hundred years in North America my mom was the first person in her family to make it past 16 without being married. Her grandmother was engaged at 12, and her great grandmother (so my gg-grandmother) was married at 10. So I know how that goes... I just don't agree with it. With all except the gg-grandmother, however, though they were told when to marry, they were able to have a say in the "who" of the situation..
I just wonder why this girl was found by workers...maybe the pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen so her family abandoned her? Maybe she tried to run?

She had to have some serious hormonal disorders.. To have devolepped that fast.. As I recall the lowest normal age pubery starts for boys is 9 and it should be the same for girls..

.. When the twins are a few years old their mother willl most likely die.. Or if not shel die anyway when they are like what 14? Maybe she'l live more but a birth at such a high age could cause some serious health problems

The Romanian life expectancy for women is 75, so if she died at life expectancy, they'd be 9. Weird coincidence, the girl who had the baby is 9. :P
I'm hoping that before she even got pregnant she had a place for the future children to go, 'cause having kids in your mid 60s really calls for thinking about that.
