Why are heterosexuals reffered to as "straight"? I realize I sound stupid. :P And where did this term come from?

I guess its because gay people were called bent or benders, so straight means not bent.

The Word hetro means "the like for the opposite sex" i think it came from latin

There are different explanations, so I did a bit of research. According to one user on Yahoo! Answers, obviously not a very credible source, "the term first began to surface in the gay community in the 1960's when gays were proud of being considered twisted. it was originally an insult."

I'm not sure if this is accurate, but it certainly sounds plausible!
