You don't need to see a gynecologist after getting your period (although your general physician should be informed once you do, for your medical records). Most girls will see one once they're 18, or once they become sexually active. At the latest, you should start seeing one by 21, or three years after being sexually active, whichever comes first. You can also see one before that, if you have a concern that your general physician can't address (or if they recommend it). If you want to go on birth control, your general physician can prescribe it, but you may wish to go to a gynecologist or see a nurse practitioner (NP) who works in their office. A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has gone through specific extra training, usually with a master's degree or a doctorate, and they're just as good for that sort of thing as an MD.

There's not really a set age or anything. I went when I was 16, so that I would know I had someone to go to if I had any problems (says my mom).
