Tips and Techniques for Debating

There are certain techniques and courtesies when debating. Below are some important points which could help you debate in the proper way. When debating it may be useful to use these to illustrate your point in a blunt and direct way without bashing anyone in any inappropriate way.

The ultimate point of debate is to persuade the listener or reader that your point or view is ''correct'!

1. RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC!

You can not debate on something you do not know anything about. If you do try to debate something and your present the wrong facts you will come off like a fool. If you don't have statistical facts or you have never experienced something yourself then do not bother to argue about it.

When researching make sure you find reliable cites. You can search the Internet, library, etc. Anywhere where you know the facts you are going to use are accurate. Remember to cite your sources. Plagiarism is illegal and on top of that, often times your opponent will ask you where you got that fact from during a rebuttal.

2. FORMULATE YOUR ARGUMENT AND POINTS!

In order to successfully convey your points to your opponent or speaker you must formulate and logically construct your argument BEFORE your debate. When doing this you should think about think about your arguments and points and then think of every weak point that your opponent can argue. After doing this you can think about a rebuttal for this or include it in your initial constructive. Do not forget to include your facts when constructing your argument for your constructive.

Another thing to remember is that in order to have a successful debate you must argue and think on the opposite view too. If you are affirmative then you must think negatively too. Your knowledge must encompass both views.

3. TIPS DURING THE DEBATE!

Below are common tips and courtesies during debate.

Be confident! If you come off as reluctant or hypocritical then you will never win.
Do not stoop so low that you begin taking 'cheap shots' or attacking your opponents in an illogical way. It will not work and you will not win. You will also look like the bad guy! Just do not do it
Always restate your point after you have finished your argument. For instance, you argue and then explain and the last thing that should be said is your final point. This is for emphasis and it will stick in the others' mind.
Mostly length is key. You should type somewhat lengthy paragraphs because when you do you can a mostly assure yourself that you explained your point. Sometimes that is not true but in most cases it is.
Do not be hypocritical. Stick to your views and points.

Be direct. Do not 'beat around the bush'.
Be forceful but do not be an ass. You do not know everything. You do not want to use capital letters and yell to get your point across.
You should never have to swear during a debate.
Once again, never insult!

Lastly, have fun! Debate is a great way to expand your mind and practicing accepting others' views. By remembering the things above you can successfully debate correctly. Remembering not to flame and not to take cheap shots can help you win!

I hope this helped you all and good luck!

About 4 months ago I read an old book, about 250 pages, on debate, called Argumentation and Debating, by Foster or some such. It was a good book, though it was very long and tiresome. This guide is good John because it takes some of the key points emphasized in that book an puts it in a very readable form. Good job!

didn't you just swear?

In my opinion, no. I was strictly showing a point and I had no malicious intent to any other person. When I said "ass" I was referring to it's definition "a stupid, foolish, or stubborn person." Nothing more.

Also, thanks I figured it was about time one of these was created. Well actually I wanted to create one after that fight thingy a few weeks back but I just got around to it today. So yay!

I do a lot of debates and presentations in my course and they are good points. I always live by the mantra. "Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them and then tell them what you just told them"

I would thank him for posting this, but John is a well-documented prostitute. I don't have proof but I knew a guy who did. In summation, let's ignore everything he says.
