What are the prices in your countries? Here till 2012 you could buy a pack of Lucky Strike for 90 Dinars (≈1$). Now they upped the prices two times yet it doesn't seem to do anything, does increased tobacco tax decrease smoking where you live?

After so many laws against smoking , I think that smoking here in Montenegro is reduced for maybe 20% in past few years ... People on Balkan are same , cigarettes are only "luxury" for most of people , that is way they escape from this present World of hard time even for that 2 minutes of smoking . I think that cigarettes make people here happier due all regular problems for 21st century living human , especially here on Balkan , no matter on class ; rich , middle , poor . I am not sure for exact current prices of cigarettes , because I don't smoke , and I never go in market ..

That is because unofficially average salary is 300e (maybe even more less) in Serbia , but their government is hiding real numbers like all governments here on Balkan ...

With the drop of the Dinar it's 250 now thanks to our glorious Serbian Progressive Party and our glorious Leader, Aleksandar Vučić. It doesn't help here, they upped the tax on packs of cigarretes but people buy paper rolls, tobacco and filters separately for about 390 Dinars, almost two times than the average cigarette pack price but it lasts 4 times longer. Smoking relieves me from the stress. There's truth in what you said, I can relate from first hand experience. In a no-stress day I can go without a smoke but when it get's hard, the cigarettes keep me normal.

Because of my great political knowledge , I can surely say that Serbia never had worse government than SPP . I think that at least 10% Serbians understand that Mirko Cvetkovic's government was best government in modern Serbian history. But I just don't understand why still more than 40% people still support this government ? Even after reducing even poor salaries for 10% . I just don't understand ... He is trying to be wolf in sheep's skin , although he was speaking that for 1 Serbian life loss , they'll kill 100 Muslims during war in Bosnia and while he was in S. Radical Party with "master" Nikolic , and few days ago , when everything was about massacre in France , he said that no one can offend or even treat Muslims in Serbia and that Muslims are his and Serbian friends , I just don't know how he doesn't shame what he was and what he is now , and how is he trying to erase everything before year of 2008 ?! That is just one example , and it is like one grain of sand on the beach . I just understand that Serbians don't make difference between good and evil , that tells us that more than 40% of Serbians has empty brain . And I just don't understand how can you live with television like "Pink" , every 2 minutes there is picture of Aca Vucic , it reminds me always on North Korea xD ... It isn't news name "minute , two" without reason , they're reminding who is supreme leader of Serbia every "minute , two" ... To conclude ; Aca Vucic hero of Futog xD ... If he continues like this , as I can watch on TV I think that someone is gonna proposal to Serbian Orthodox Church to they canonize him ... "Saint martyr pussy mouthed reverend Magnificnet Aca of Serbia and rescuer of Futog " .

In front of the RTS building parking lot I wrote a grafiti saying "VUČIĆU PEDERU!". It was there for a week or two and then they realized it spits between his eyes and scrubbed it off. If you think it's bad that the current generation is brainwashed, my generation is 80% brainwashed. Ceca, Arkan, Pink, their Trinity. The nineties degenerated our socially conservative society. My grandparents on both sides never divorced, their children, 75% chance that they will divorce. Wanna hear a littke secret? During his latest visit to Kosovo, the Immortal Leader Pičkousti cried because Vulin told him it's gonna be a statue of Aco, but it was a statue of some random Serbian king, Milutin I think.

You think situation here in Montenegro is better ?! Fuck no , same retarded generations , unprepared for future life ,they just think about today and tomorrow ... Breaking of wedlock is normal on Balkan , it is enough to people ( preko kurca ) , all lies , corruption , wars ... I mean space of ex Yugoslavia is in economical crisis for 25 years , in normal world , crisis started in 2008 .. And people is silent , they aren't fighting for their rights , it is only important to pay bills , and to eat , and to try to survive from month to month , and to work until their death , because fuckin' government is increasing retirement age every month , and I expect one day law to everyone must work until their death , and then they're asking how can this happen , so much crime , murders , nationalism , and "white plague" , people doesn't have even wish for sex , it is not in love , it became just urge , even if you want to have it you need condoms , and with 10% lower salary it is more important to buy bread then condoms . So everything that is happening it is normal , it is enough to people any more , we are cracking on our seams , worse then this can't be .. At least we have good leadership here , Milo is working on our national interests and we were one of most developing nations in 2009 , we are near doors of EU and NATO , also average salary here is more than 450e . But what is happening with most of ex Yugoslavia ? Nothing , same it was 25 years ago ... Something must change , some weird time came , there is no more middle class like in Socialism , so respected worker , worker , basics of country, now there are only higher class and poor .. It is sad .. And all that repression , they sent to jail guy that said "Vucicu pederu" just because he was offending "Supreme Leader" , that isn't North Korea God damn , that is prove that there isn't democracy , isn't point of democracy freedom of speech ? Where is it ? You can't express your own opinion , so basically , you have two choices : to love "Supreme Leader" or to hate him and to be quiet ... When I remember Aca crying , ahahha , it remind me on Nikolic when talking about leaving SPP and Vucic becoming president of it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AABn8Mp7gQY

I think it is the government trying to cash in on suckers.

in the US it varies wildly by state and municipality and depends where you buy them.

most local governments place a moderate tax on tobacco sales for extra revenue. so your average pack of Marlboro reds usually costs between $5 - 6. Indian smoke shops exist in some states and are exempt from charging tobacco taxes (usually under tribal jurisdiction) so the same pack can be as cheap as 2 - 3 dollars if you buy from them instead.

then you have some states where legislators have raised the tobacco tax ridiculously high to deter smoking. this failed in areas where Indian smoke shops operate, because obviously if a pack costs $12 at the gas station but is only $3 at Chief Blacklung's Peace Pipe, everybody just goes there instead. otherwise, prohibitively high prices cause most people to either quit smoking or switch to an e-cig.

After tax, most brands are about $8 - $10 per pack in my area.

In Romania (the country I live in), cigarette prices might seem low for someone who lives in a country where the average wage is higher: it ranges between 13 and 16-17 lei/package (3.25 to 4.25 dollars, as of today). But compared to the average wage in Romania, which is around 400-500 dollars/month, they are quite expensive.

I pay roughly 6-7 bucks post tax. I know some fancier ones are more and some are less.

Prices here in Finland are between 5 - 6.30 euros (5.60 - 7 usd). I think the government is just trying to cash in us. I dont smoke that much anymore but i dont think raising taxes all the time wont decrease smoking.

For a standard pack of about 20 king size cigarettes, any common brand (not the ritzy stuff), it's about $10. Although it varies from store to store sometimes. I've only bought cigarettes like 5 times since I'm still 9 months shy of the legal age here, but that price has been the same for me mostly.

I don't smoke regularly but I don't think raising the price of cigarettes does anything to deter smokers, all it does is squeeze smokers of their money, especially if they're young.

I personally don't smoke but a pack where I live is like $6 max. You can find some cheap shit for ~$1, a regular pack will be like $2-3.
does increased tobacco tax decrease smoking where you live?
Economy is one of my university studies so I can say with absolute certainty that yes it does.

Holy hell, how some prices are high across the Atlantic. Here before the tax increase you could buy 10 packs for 10 dollars and now you can buy 5. On the side note, I need to quit smoking because I'm running low on cash and lungs.

In The UK the higher prices may have had some effect but I guess if people want to smoke they will and just spend less on other things. Many counries have tried a huge range of measures, Banning adverts - warnings on the pack and in the media so perhaps the taxes and duties are just one element.

Here about 7 - nearly 9 for a pack of 20 and some companies are doing more options on hand rolling tobacco.

Just using the online money converter 9 is over 13 dollars US.

I live in the US and in my state it varies 5.50-7.00 a pack.
I don't think raising prices will make people quit smoking. It may make some quit, but not many. It's an addiction so it doesn't matter how much they cost, people will get them, even if they have to steal them or rob people to get the money. Addictions require more help than raising the prices. A lot of people go to the next state where they are a lot cheaper. If you get caught, you can get in trouble, but they really don't enforce it. In my opinion it's more of a tax to feed off of people's addictions by raising prices.

Well it's definitely expensive, but I also DEFINITELY do NOT! want to smoke, other than maybe a cigar with my uncle while fishin. Even that's pushing it these days LOL

Plenty of kids at school smoke though!
