Finally a politician who dares extol the benefits of globalization publicly and isn't fueling some inwards looking but populist protectionism ideas/Trumponomics/Brexit. Kind of ironic for a communist leader to defend free trade while the leader of the self-proclaimed free nation threatening free trade.

Unsurprising. If the US is going to back out of Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, then the Chinese will step in. Assuming they don't get any roadblocks, I predict the Trump presidency will only accelerate the rise of China.

I wouldn't really call Xi a free trade guy so much though, as his country is still pretty closed off an illiberal. But still, he is better than many of his predecessors. If there is one thing you can count on in history, it's seeing closed-off Chinese leaders. This guy is a bit exceptional.
