View Full Version : Social Anxiety- Advice pls

So, tomorrow I am going to my friends b day party. It is taking place at a pottery place where we paint pots or something like that, which isn't too bad but the next thing is what gets me. We are then going to a japanese restaraunt. I don't want to sound racist and I don't want to be rude but just the thought of going to this resteraunt makes me so anxious. I cannot handle talking to people with foreign accents because it makes me so afraid that I won't be able to understand them. I don't want to offend them or embarass myself and just thinking about having to do this makes me so anxious I have to take a couple breaths. Please give me some advice on what to do because this is tomorrow at 3:00. Thank you in advance. :)

I know what you mean - sometimes people's accents make understanding them difficult. If it gets that way at the restaurant, ask them to speak slower. Being up front with the person and saying you're having trouble understanding them is better than pretending to understand. One of your friends might step up to help if they notice you're floundering a bit. This sounds like a fun day, so I hope you have a good time. Try not to stress over it and enjoy!

Thank you for the advice. If this happens I will try what you said. Plus my friend offered to order for me if it becomes too much for me. Thank and I will try to have fun. :)

You don't sound racist. It sometimes does take time to get used to people who speak English with an accent. But they might not speak with an accent there. It might be no problem at all! And hopefully the food will be great and you'll have a fun time. :)

After sleeping on it I do feel a lot better about it. Thank you, I am definitely excited for it. :)

Remember they might also have trouble understanding you and feel the same way. Just speak slowly and clearly and be understanding. :)
