This just came into my head whilst searching the psychiatric ward forums.

If I had a problem or something like that, and if I didn't want anyone on here to know that it is me, you could have an anonymous mode to protect the identity of the OP.
Of course they would have to be a member to use it, and couldn't overly use it, but for those times when you don't want anyone to know it's you, it would be a good idea.

Thanks for the afterthought.

I have actually considered this before but never mentioned it. On a forum site I used to be on, there was a function where registered users could post anonymously but staff could still see who it was. I'm not sure if I remember what the addon was nor do I know if it was vb3. My first response is that if we could implement something like that, I wouldn't be terribly opposed to it, but I'd have to think about it a little more deeply. Would it only apply to posting threads or would it apply to posting responses as well? And would it only be enabled in certain sections?

Edit: Allison has her shit together more than I do. I'd just refer to that.

This has been suggested in the past (not very recently, though) - here (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=212156) and here (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67426).

I really don't have anything to add to what's already been said in those two threads, and I can see it both ways honestly.

You know what, maybe I'm not that against the idea as I was 2 years ago.

I mean, I know the internet is the anonymous place that it is, but many people opt to lose some of their anonymity on the site. Many people tell their names, post photos, exchange contact details, and even tell what city they're from or what college they intend to go. And with that comes a certain personality to the account on VT, and friendships too.

And then someone, with friends and a "reputation" to hold here, might want to ask a very embarrassing question or vent out a particular point of their life. While first being on the forums they were free to do so without judgment by "known" peers, they eventually get to know people and might want anonymity from them too. Imagine the ROTW crew on P101 :lol3:

Site rules aren't in favor of a second anonymity, however.

Throughout your time on VirtualTeen, you are only allowed to register a single account. If you create another account while already having access to your original, the duplicate account will be banned and your original account will be frozen for a week. If you create another account after this, all accounts will be banned. If you are banned and attempt to make another account, not only will it be banned but your IP Address will be banned from the site entirely. Under no circumstances are you ever allowed to have more than one account for any reason unless otherwise granted by an Administrator. If you forgot your password, email admin@virtualteen.org (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/%E2%80%9Dadmin@virtualteen.org%E2%80%9D) rather than making a new account.

Given the existence of dynamic IPs, proxies, and multiple access points, the rule is usually more of a scare than a 100% enforceable thing (though some people are outright obvious about it, right mods? :P) Why are we restricting this type of anonymity on a help site? Wrongdoers will find their ways and a throwaway account is pretty harmless if it doesn't get to a minimum of 100 posts.

Maybe an alteration on these rules? I don't know, but it's my 2 cents.

Yeah anonymous mode could be cool

I feel like in the case of an OP in a help section, this could be a good idea. Obviously, so long as staff could see who it was, and no responses were anonymous (as I think that would be abused to heck) it could be a good idea.

I've seen this implemented on that one LGBT+ forum... The closet one? I think? It seems to work well there, and they have a similar community vibe, and also keep a pretty close eye on trolls etc.

I've been on forums where the Anonymous feature was confined to one thread, where people could post without fear of judgment. However, abuse of the anonymous feature was a bannable offense.

I think it should only be allowed in one or two specific threads, that are meant for serious help requests, and that in those specific threads the storytelling rule is relax a bit, because usually I find if a person is in need to THAT much help, it's gonna get a bit personal because good advice giving will require context and a backstory of what led up to a situation that you're asking advice on in the first place.

I think respondents to OP's of such threads should not be anonymous.

The thread creater, should have the option to allow anonymous replies.
Or, there could be like an anonymous exhausting forum, where you can blow of steam, and have your thread expire after like a day or two, with mentions off, and defiantly only for members. Kind of like the 'White Padded Room' but anon and self destructing.

This is all IMHO.
