I have to write a short story for an assingment, and i need to know;if a woman cheated on a man, what evidence would there be? I cant say that the man read the woman's text messages etc because the story is supposed to be set in the 1800,s.

Letters: sometimes men and women wrote one another love letters and the husband would come upon one of them. That's how he got his evidence.
Gossip: people would often mention 'so and so is cheating on such and such' to one another. Certain malicious people would then mention it to the husband in order to piss him off or laugh about it.
In flagrante delicto: the man would come upon the woman cheating on him with her lover (might be too inappropriate for your assignment, I dunno)

He could've found out it from hearsay.

At that time period they would largely have founded out from coming across letters to/from the second partner, as well as general gossip among the community or circle of friends. Other than that the only way really would be through waling in on it occurring.
