The ground on the hillsides (they call it a mountain but it's just a hill) are littered with a heavy crop of acorns. Squirrels haven't taken many to cache because the squirrel population was decimated by the droughts of the last few years. Same with the whitetail deer.

The coyotes seem to have increased in number. I don't know why. We see them at night, usually crossing the road. Light tan or milky gray, looking like skinny dogs traveling in groups of two or three trotting along. Dogs here need lots of vaccinations for this and that, I wonder how the coyotes live with rabies, heartworms, distemper and all the other things. It seems like they would suffer so much that they wouldn't survive.

Some may survive, the most will die. That's nature. I think as long as humans didn't cause the death of entire populations within the local fauna, this is just a natural selection process.
