Ok, last year i saw ive been developing some stretch marks on my hips, my legs, and kind of under my arms, they are really starting to freak me out, im going to be going to the gym soon to loose some weight. Would loosing weight take away the stretchmarks? What can I possibly do to get rid of them? :(

You can't get rid of stretch marks, which really sucks (I have them on my hips and thighs). But if you lose weight and take care of your skin, they will fade. :)

Stretch marks happen when skin stretches too far, usually during a growth spurt, pregnancy, or sudden drastic weight gain, causing the skin's naturally elasticity to break down. My advice is to just embrace the fact that they're a part of you. I have many stretch marks on my hips and thighs from from growing 5 inches per year for 8 years straight. I know, they SUCK. But at least they're not on your face, right? Stretch marks are usually more noticeable when they're newer, but like bruises, they fade with time. They don't go away like bruises do, but they will become harder to notice. Taking care of your skin is a good way to encourage them to fade, like Kate said. Keep your skin properly moisturized with some lotion, it's about all you can do other than investing money in lame creams that don't really work.

Thanks guys, so your saying, its normal for these to appear, and just leave them alone? I know this may sound weird but, there is stretchmark cream for pregnant ladies, would that work to make these ones go away? And WILL they ever go away during time, I heard if you keep your stretchmarks, there will be scars for when they go away.

As others said they will fade away once you start losing weight. There are creams/lotions you can use but it won't do that much of a difference if you don't start losing weight

Losing weight? Who said he even needs to? Stretchmarks don't just happen from weight gain, they can happen during a growth spurt from getting too tall too fast as well. Seeing as Brian hasn't mentioned a sudden weight gain, I don't think it's right to assume that's what cased the marks. Marks from a change in height don't go away based on weight loss. We shouldn't advise him to try to lose weight when we know nothing about how much he weighs, his body type, any of that.

Yeah.... and if he had not even mentioned it I would have asked him first rather than make assumptions.

*is totally embarrassed* I overlooked that, I'm sorry. The way I read it, he was just going to the gym to get in shape, not because he needed to lose a significant amount of weight. Again, I'm sorry.

my sister uses those strech mark stuff called "bio oil" it seems to be working for her. i don't think there is anything really wrong with stretch marks theyre not really that noticable i think.

I would apply Cocoa Butter lotion after showers to try to keep your skin moist and to kinda get elasically for the stretching that takes place. Losing weight would NOT take away the marks. (THink about it. When pregnant women get stretchmarks do they go away??? :???:) It would actually make it look worse! I am sorry but they are going to be there probably for the rest of your life. Unless you gain weight...but yeah...thats not really the point here!

I didn't think losing weight would take away the marks either, but whoever mentioned it seemed so convinced, I didn't question it. xP I would think though that once the collagen elastin breaks down, it stays broken. All that the creams fix is the appearance, they help fade them so the color matches the rest. For instance, my older stretch marks that Ive had for years now are like a pale pink color that blend with my skin pretty well, but ones that I've gotten in the past few months due to my Lithium-related weight gain are a nasty purple.
Also, just a tidbit of info here, a good way to tell if they;re due to weight or a growth spurt is to look at them. If they go up and down, it's from weight gain (skin stretching sideways), and if they're side to side then it's more likely to be from growing (skin stretching length-wise). I didn't know there was a difference until pretty recently, I thought it was kind of interesting.

Ok well I'm pretty scared now, so your saying those marks will be there for the REST OF MY LIFE!? Why dont I just kill myself and get it over with. Once I get a better body, id love to take off my shirt in the summer ect, but with those stretchmarks there, i cant, and for the ones on my hips, they arent really ON my hips, thier right above them, its getting me really mad that you guys are saying they'll be there for my whole life. Ok I now understand that loosing weight will not fix them, get off that topic.

well they will for sure get harder to see than they are now. but they will never completly go away thats what i am saying. you should not be fustrated. millions of people have marks all over their body that they dont wnat. you should be confident with yourself. dont just give up all hope because you think you will look so bad that you cant go to a beach! just wait for them to get lighter and then go about your life like they are not even there!!!!:whoops:
